Mamotte Shugogetten
Anime, Boyz, Girlz, Manga

Recently, I've been watching this old forgotten anime called Mamotte Shugogetten (Protect Me, Heavenly Guardian!) And it's honestly a vibe. I first found out about it from the intro being recommended to me on Youtube. Let me tell you, that intro is GREAT. I adore the song, but the visuals are really cute.
I tried to look for traces of this show, but it seems it never got a western audience. Despite that, redrawing the intro became a popular trend in japan! I'm pretty used to this happening, one of my favorite shows Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront) is literally The Most popular example of that happening with it's Sugar and Bitter Step trend being a hit culturally.

Some of the only visual proof of this show's existence you can find on google is this sole gif. Other than that, tough luck!! It's actually really cute, so I saved it. (the round border is built in decoration, it won't be formatted like that when...IF you save.)
I'm about to watch the second episode now actually!
Honestly, I'm very much reminded of Ranma. It's another one of those "mysterious magical girl from another world is accidentally transported to Earth and hangs around this generic male MC" stories. The trope was so common in late 90s-early 00s anime but it's basically DISAPPEARED now. Does this trope even have a name? The latest example I can think of this is from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid... but Urusei Yatsura, Pita-Ten, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan, and sooooo many others from that era. I've never watched Chobits, but I think it's that premise too. Not to mention the girl ALWAYS is completely inept about modern day culture. I'm not complaining, I'm really moreso surprised. The MC always ends up getting fucked over by the main girl's shenanigans too, physical or via humiliation. That being said, Mamotte Shugogetten's absurd spin on things (similar to Rumiko Takahashi's writing) is why I enjoy it so much despite the common tropes. It's also unapologetically chinese, for some reason. ...What's with 90s-00s animanga being so chinese?? No it's fine I just... didn't expect it to be chinese.... Even D. Gray-Man which is set in europe has an entire arc set in China.. but the thing is in anime chinese culture is oftentime used more as an aesthetic than an exploration of different cultures.

Cardcaptor Sakura and Ranma strike me as particularly BIG offenders of that.
Okay, she's really stupid but she's earnest and I find her adorable for it. Side note, I also love the eyecatchers for this show. I mean, I love eyecatchers in general and I don't think I've come across a bad one, but still. It's cute!
Aaaand I've finished the episode. My one complaint is that the main character Tasuke doesn't really do much of anything. He just lets the shenanigans happen to him until a building is completely destroyed and he scolds to girls, only to immediately say that it's okay and he forgives them. My issue isn't exactly the episodic nature of the show... but his personality. The first scene of the show is Tasuke being adventurous, enthusiastic, reckless... but now he's just kind of... nothing. A guy that has an entire family of adventurers and excitedly flied and crashed a 1-man plane in his first scene doesn't just... silently watch as fantastical things happen to him. Have him DO something. Have him be excited at the oppurtunity!! Have him REACT to the action instead of just going "awww man >:/" every couple seconds!!! I hope this changes later... but jeez.
Anyways, the outro is also great. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes those old bittersweet and calm anime outros. Really gives you anemoia.
Well, I'm going to continue passively watching this show. Maybe another person like me years into the future will stumble onto this blog, looking for any traces of this show. Maybe it'll be buried and forgotten forever. Who really knows!!
