I got curious and wanted to watch Legally Blonde because I remembered that There Right There came from it. However, I thought it came from the movie, when it actually came from the musical. Thankfully, there was a pro-shot available on YouTube, so I decided to watch it because what else am I going to do on a boring Saturday afternoon? I then found out that I should’ve watched the movie first, but hey, the musical was GREAT!
So let’s get to the plot:
Elle Woods is a blonde (this’ll be VERY important) sorority girl who just recently got dumped by Warner Huntington III. He wants to become a lawyer, so he says that he needs someone “serious.” Elle then decides to enroll in Harvard and become a lawyer just to impress her ex and win him back. After winning the case of Brooke Wyndham, she learns to be herself.
I really enjoyed this! Elle is such a sweet person, and I like that she’s not a stereotypical dumb blonde. It’s showcased at the very beginning, where someone tries to sell her a last-season dress, and she’s able to go, “nuh uh I know that dress is old.” Although she’s apparently dumber here, because in the movie she takes herself seriously by herself, here Emmett Forrest tells her how to do it. That’s just what TV Tropes said, though.
Speaking of Emmett, he and Elle are such an adorable couple. I’m a sucker for the “no one believed in me but you” trope, or whatever it’s called. Their surnames even match, and it’s so EUHIFENKJDNDJKNDKJNNN 😭
The other characters are great as well; I think Paulette is my favorite. Her having a whole song about Ireland is fucking hilarious. She does eventually find her Ireland too; she gets with a UPS delivery man named Kyle! Literally everyone thinks he’s hot, and I honestly can’t help but agree lol. Something I enjoyed was that Elle’s peers eventually came around to taking her seriously. Even Vivienne, who literally admitted that she was praying for her downfall from the very beginning. The only one that doesn’t is Warner, but, like, he’s kind of a POS anyway.
Miscellaneous stuff
• Favorite songs: What You Want, Blood In The Water, Whipped Into Shape, There! Right There!
• Seeing gay or European in context was so exciting. I practically pointed at my screen and went, “THEY’RE DOING THE THING! THEY’RE DOING THE THING”
• This musical is funny; it didn’t have me rolling on the floor, but still. “What, does she have three boobs or something?” is something that’ll stick in mind.
• Callahan getting fired in the final act made me cheer FUCK THAT DUDE!!!
In conclusion, this musical is absolutely worthy of a watch. 10/10! Maybe I'll watch the movie too so I can compare it to this.
